Charing Cover Flap Fallen Off

The cover flap to my charging socket has fallen off. It’s held on by four pathetic plastic lugs that are destined to snap a minute anybody applies a bit of pressure to it. My 12yo daughter caught it with her arm as she walked past and off it came.

Has anybody else had the same problem?

I have seen a couple of other EQAs on the road with the cover flap missing, so it’s got to be a common problem. It’s a really poor design.

I escalated it to Mercedes they’re not interested. I’ve told them that the part is not fit for purpose and they’ve just not responded.

Judging by your photo, and having just looked at the flap on my car, I assume the plastic cover (shown in your photo) clips into the frame which hinges from the car body. It's certainly not very robust. Given that the frame is reasonably large and covers the charging sockets, it would be better if the cover detached from the frame without breaking its attaching lugs. One should expect better quality from MB.

Our garage is reasonably compact for two cars and I've always been wary of not running into the flap when I'm charging my car (in the garage). I'll be especially careful from now on! Thank you for letting us know about your unfortunate incident.

Definitely a weak point in the design. It happened to me as well. The two bottom lugs in your case are still intact. You should be able to slide it back into position. You can then apply a bead of silicone or gapfiller (black preferably to colour match with the plastic frame) on all four sides. If you retrieve the broken bits, you could use power glue gel to stick them back on. The silicone bead is a permanent fix unless one hit the open flap so that that the frame comes off the hinge.

Yes I broke mine as well. I was successful in fixing it by purchasing a specialised glue from an auto shop that not only acts as a glue but a filler as well. Place the cover on and tape into postion. Add the glue via the four small holes and follow instructions re the bonding time. I would say mine is now far stronger than before.

Well, first time it happened I managed to find the lugs and glued them back on. Second time not so lucky can’t find 1 of them, glued the other 3 on again. I’m going to fix it on with some Silicon or Araldite.
Replacing it : the part is ok, £34 ish, but then painting it is another £100 ish. So I’m not doing that because it will only happen again!
