This was not the EQ iI was expecting to see at Geneva, especially when all Mercedes has shown us was the larger 4 door. Now there's a Smart ForTwo Electric Drive with around 57 or 58 miles of Range. This is a strange development because the Smart EV wasn't exactly the most popular cars from what I remember.

I think the Smart EV didn't do that well in sales due to the fact it didn't come to market at the right time, from what it seems, a few years from now will be prime time for these really compact city cars. Just look at what similar plans rival brands have, Lexus is one of them.

Years ago, it was a race to see who could get more compact and the Smart Car won, now it's a race to see who can release the larger SUVs/crossovers and the Smart Car just isn't that appealing anymore. Guess people realized it's just not very useful on a daily basis.

They can be useful, its just that the market didn't need them right at that moment, however these days with more cities being built so people can work, live and play all within a reasonable distance, compact city cars are on the rise. MB's car2go program is a success and a prime example of how city cars can be used.

Have they indicated if there have been any improvements to the Smart cars performance? Considering the older models only had around 80 miles of range, I just don't think that's going to cut it in this segment anymore.

Going all-electric is what they're after. Even a current model already gets close to 100 miles range. 25-50 miles more would position them well against other segments right above while keeping price low enough.
